Area Code 226 and 519
Daily living: Did you know we have pretty much run out of phone numbers in South Western Ontario? Well, if you want to have one of the 519's before there are none, go and get yourself a number now. According to the Globe and Mail's Globe Technology today, we will have a 226 area code existing in parallel to 519 starting tomorrow. So we will be just like Toronto with its second 626 area code that exists in parallel to 416.
Customers in the 519 area code are being urged to begin dialling 10 digits on all local calls, to accustom themselves to the new plan... Callers still dialling seven digits for local calls after June 17, 2006, will receive a recorded message reminding them that they will soon be required to dial 10 digits. By October of that year, callers must dial 10 digits to complete their local calls within both the 519 and 226 area codes.
I recall reading somewhere that when NYC ended up running out of the 212 phone numbers there was a little snobbery (is that a word?) going on. If you had one of the original 212's you were somehow better than those who had the new area code. And you just know it will cause a lot of blank stares when you give out your number and those under rock dwellers don't know about it and they don't believe you...

Carpe Diem
