Doctor Who rocks
entertainment: I just watched the North American Premier of Doctor Who on the CBC. I realy like it. The opening title sequence is pretty slick and they have the music down exactly right. It is probably 15 years or more since I heard the theme, and the unique sound of the Tardis materializing and they pulled them off. Made me smile hearing and seeing it. Took me right back 20 years ago to six pm weeknites on WNED in Buffalo.
the special effects are quite good for a TV show - not Star Trek level, but quite good. The Tardis is, well, the Tardis. The interior with it's central console and such is just right. A little dirtier than the pure white one of old, but that's fine. The plot is exactly what you would expect from a Dr. Who episode: it's just campy enough to be funny, enough action and suspense to keep you interested and not overly complex character development. And the assistant, Rose, played by 22yr old Billie Piper, is a hawt. Aparently she was or is a pop singer in the UK.
So, they have pulled off a good updating of the show. I am not sure if all the episodes will be an hour - the original ones were only 1/2 hour cliff hangers minus commercials, but regardless, this is something that could turn into a cult classic. Even if they re- do some of the classic villains like The Master, and the Cyber Men, and of course the Daleks. I hope they have Unit as well.
Something on Tuesdays to watch now. Thanks CBC. You came through with a good import when the Space Channel didn't want to fork over the coin for the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
Carpe Diem

I watched part of it, and then switched channels - I had the opposite reaction to you. My fav Dr. was Tom Baker (played the Dr from 1976-1981), and if you compare the old episodes to this new one, it becomes (to me at least) apparent that the acting in the old series was far superior. Thus, I am disappointed so far
