Habemus Papem Benedict XVI history: Where were you when you heard yesterday? I was listening to the CBC news in the shower getting ready for work, when they announced first the smoke was not white but no one was sure, then Vatican Radio reporting it was and a new Pope had been chosen. They switched over to national coverage in Toronto and when I pulled into my parking spot at work about an hour later I heard the cardinal announce Joseph Ratzinger was the new Pope. I have to say that having taken Latin for a while in school helped as I got get bits of pieces of the Latin and Italian that was being spoken before the translator kicked in.
There is lots of information out there on Benedict XVI, so I won't bore you with the details, but the consensus is it will be a shorter Papacy given his age, and it will be a conservative one with little change. More than one commentator has said it will be a holding pattern until the next pope. Several have been disappointed at his choice. Regardless, he has a tough act to follow.
On a plus side, at least the election was over quick, with no hanging chads and recounts in Florida. :)
