Pope John Paul II laid to rest
History: Pope John Paul II is lowered into his resting place below St. Peter's in the Vatican. Somewhere that has never been seen in public before. And on a side note, with more than a couple of million people in St. Peter's Basilica in the last 72 hours or so - maybe more people - how come I have not seen one picture of any of it on Flickr? Pic from the Daily Mail.
This was, as all the talking heads on TV have said, unprecedented. A funeral which stopped a great deal of the Western and developing world. Imagine anyone else having that many people coming to their funeral? And I think that the coffin industry might take a dip. With the Pope being buried in a simple wooden coffin made of cyprus wood, I think the less ornate coffins will be an option people may select over the gaudy and uber expensive bronze and so on. Huge dove tail joints visible on the head and foot of the highly laquered coffin. And the only adornment being a stylized cross with the M for the Virgin Mary in gold script. The one in the picture is an outer coffin with the coat of arms on it.
Santo Subito is what the crowd kept chanting during the ceremony. Which translated from the Latin means, essentially, make him a saint soon or quickly.
Carpe Diem
