By Toutatis!
Space: when I was a kid I read a comic called Asterix. About Gauls rebelling against the Romans in the area of Europe that is now France. One of the characters used to exclaim "By Toutatis!" as in "Holy Crap!" Asteroid Toutatis missed us by about 4x the distance of the Earth to the Moon on Wednesday. A hair's breadth in astronomical terms. And this beast is a planet killer: about 2.9 miles long and 1.5 miles wide (4.6 by 2.4 kilometers). It would pack a punch for sure. NASA has an excellent Java based app that shows where the thing is in space and in relation to other planets. Use the controls to move by day or year or click the date and select one in the pop up window. I personally would like to be on Mars August 29-Sept 2, 2096. It looks from the simulation that it will pass right under the Southern Martian pole. It's orbit isn't perfectly in the same plane with that of the planets, but does cross it. What else is out there? Thanks Sher for finding the Java link!
Carpe Diem
